Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?

Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is a day to celebrate and say thank you to the important male figures in our lives. Father’s Day was introduced by an American woman named Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910. Sonara heard a sermon about Mother’s Day while she was in her local church. She decided that there should be a day for both Mother’s and Father’s as they are equally as important. Sonara specifically wanted to show appreciation towards fathers as hers had raised her and her five siblings after her mother passed away. Father’s Day began in Australia in 1936.

There are many ways to show appreciation to your dad this Father’s Day. These include breakfast in bed, taking them out for a meal, making them a personalised gift or buying them a bouquet of luxurious chocolates! Modern day Father’s Day celebrations not only celebrate and show appreciation to our dad’s, but to our Grandfather’s, Uncles, Brothers, Boyfriends, Husbands and Father’s-In-Law. Dad’s have a special connection with their children and often teach us life lessons that no one else could. While we may not show our appreciation everyday, Father’s Day is a good excuse to let them know that we are thinking about them, appreciate the sacrifices they have made for us and their unconditional love. Pick up the phone and give them a call to let them know that you love them as it will make their day. If you are remembering your Dad today with your family, reminisce on the ways he was and continues to be in your life and find comfort in knowing that he lives on through you.

Happy Father’s Day!
