Celebrating Father's Day 2024

Celebrating Father's Day 2024

*Terms & Conditions apply

Father’s Day is a time to celebrate and recognise all the Dads and Father figures in our lives. As we look forward to Father's Day 2024, on Sunday 3rd September, we look at why this day is so important.

Father’s Day in Australia consistently falls on the first Sunday in September every year and celebrates the first Sunday of Spring. The Father’s Day tradition can be found in over 111 countries worldwide, but have you ever wondered why we celebrate Father’s Day in Australia? Let us fill you in.

Who started Father’s Day and why?

Traditionally, Father’s Day began in the USA in 1908, when a memorial was held for the tragic loss of 361 men in a mining accident. The same year when Mother’s Day was newly established and gaining popularity and it was decided that fathers deserve the same acknowledgment. Sorona Smart Dodd is the name behind the campaign for equal honour, she held her first Father’s Day event on 19th June 1910 with church celebrations.

Why is Father’s Day different around the world?

Father’s Day is commonly celebrated worldwide in June. Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji all hold this event for Dad’s in September; in order to align similarly with America.

Why do we celebrate Father's Day?

Father’s Day is a day celebrated globally, where all dads are appreciated and finally get to put their feet up for a full day of gratitude. The true joy that comes from Father’s Day is spending time with family, not necessarily giving gifts but being connected.

When did we start celebrating Father's Day in Australia?

The celebration of Father’s Day in Australia was a slow movement, and the official recognition did not resonate with Australians for many years. It was only until 1919 that notices for Father’s Day church services began to appear in Sydney newspapers.

Everyone was encouraged to wear a red flower to the churches in honour of Father’s Day.

Why do we give gifts on Father's Day?

Ms Janet Heyden, was the force behind allowing Dad a chance to be showered with affection. She was also the key movement behind Mother’s Day. Back in 1925, Ms Janet Heyden organised small gifts to get delivered to elderly men who were alone in the hospital. This traditional theme continues, where gifts are still given on Father’s Day to show appreciation.

What are some things to do on Father’s Day in Australia?

Father’s Day is not a public holiday in Australia, but as this is held on the first Sunday of Spring the day is traditionally spent outside. In Australia, family outdoor activities like BBQ’s, a game of cricket, a day at the beach or simply just tinkering in the shed are all popular ways to spend the day.

What's the best gift for Father's Day?

If you think your Dad has enough socks, ties or gadgets, it's time to swap things around. We’ve all heard the saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”, so consider edible gifts that relate to their passions, such as beer hampers, chocolate treat boxes or locally sourced cheese hampers

How to make a gift feel more personalised?

There is no sweeter gesture than a handmade card, a shared lunch, or giving Dad the perfect excuse to do as little as possible. But sometimes you want the combination of a considered gift, that also has a personalised touch, that's why Edible Blooms introduced the ability add a photo to a gift tag, or a sweet drawing letting Dad know how much you care.
